Whether you believe in climate change or not, our weather patterns are changing. Not for the better, I fear. Many British meteorologists predict warmer and wetter winters, and an increasing number of heatwaves. I have recently written about the cisequences of these changes and how they affect our photography. Here is the link https://kendavis.photium.com/news115160.html

Optical Illusion - or a Teaching Aid?

Who remembers the 'Lucky Dip' from childhood days? A shy dip into Santa's sack at a special event or a department store? Well the annual review of my digital picture library feels very much like that nostalgic memory. I never know what I am likely to find.
Invariably lots of dross that should have been deleted years ago. And similars in abundance. Get rid of them and gain valuable space. Occasionally you find real gems that deserve more attention. Find out how I set about discovering long-forgotten pictorial treasures.

Personal health can have a bearing on the way we see colours. From midlife onwards, human eyes can deteriorate and vision becomes impaired. The growth of cataracts can distort clarity of vision and change colour perception. Read more here

A Leica Fellowship friend suggested that I should consider adding this picture to my recent article on helping nature in our gardens. A search of my new ACDSee database quickly found my pheasant pictures, out of more than 160,000 mixed subject images. It appears at the end of my article here https://david2008.photium.com/helping-nature-by-david-askham

Smartphones are extremely capable communication devices with the additional benefit of including a very capable camera. Additionally, there are practical processing tools and a simple digital asset management system, or DAM. My guess is that few smartphone photographers embrace these aspects of smartphone ownership. For those readers who are more advanced than me, please suggest how I might proceed by making a comment or suggestion

When a holiday is primarily about uniting distant family members, I make a conscious decision to rule out serious photography. However, recently: I have been exploring the type of camera most people carry with them nowadays. A smartphone camera.
I would not claim to have advanced very far up the learning curve, but I think that I am a shade ahead of my own family when it comes to post-processing. The clever algorithms satisfy most users' needs. But I differ. Thus it was that a mid-priced Galaxy smartphone camera captured the illustration published in this news item.

I have once again updated my thoughts of the X series of cameras after Leica has terminated their future development and dispersed the design team. My notes have proved useful in the past, particularly to readers worldwide who have approached me regarding their performance and reliability. There continues to be interest (and a little speculation) in this important segment of the digital camera market. So maybe we should quietly, and without tangible evidence, watch this space.

Capturing lilac-time was my first priority this sunny day. While it is so captivating to look at and sense by scent, you have to be quick. Otherwise, the first florets will fade and spoil the pristine appearance as experienced today. Read how I captured this gorgeous flower this morning.

Winter photography (2024)

In the United Kingdom, you can never be certain about the start of winter. It can arrive in the middle of autumn, or delayed until after the onset of spring. So it is very easy to be caught unprepared, both physically and mentally.

Apart from a dusting of short-lived frost, this year is proving to be equally unpredictable. But that situation could change with snow forecast any day. Now is the time to take stock and recharge the batteries. Time also to review my checklist.
