Colour Perception and the Photographer
14th December 2024
Colour is largely taken for granted by most people. Some photographers claim or clamour for colours produced by certain camera brands, but colour perception is very subjective. When it comes to setting a camera, most people are quite happy to leave the default setting for white balance on automatic, or AWB (Automatic White Balance). Only more serious photographers progress further and strive to understand how to obtain contamination-free colours, using either a colour temperature meter or a calibrated grey card.

Recently my long-ago-diagnosed cataracts deteriorated significantly, interfering seriously with my eyesight, entailing urgent remedial action. One eye received a replacement lens four weeks ago, and the other one should soon be scheduled. Meanwhile, I am experiencing the strangeness of having a good eye and another desperately in need of renewal. I am able to assess what, if anything, I have been missing with my ageing eyes.
