A skyscape in South Wales (2024)

12th June 2024
I have currently escaped to a spacious private house in Pembrokeshire for the purpose of meeting the newest member of the family. There has been little time for serious photography, but I did manage to capture this skyscape at 7.31 am yesterday.

It shows a vista towards the north east of Sandersfoot, across Carmarthen Bay, including the western part of the Gower Peninsular. The Bay is also famous for the Pendine Sands.

Although equipped with a Leica CL and two lenses, this shot was grabbed before breakfast, using a Galaxy mid-range phone camera. That might seem a curious choice; allow me to explain.

Having failed to encourage younger members of the family to learn how to use conventional photographic gear, I decided to explore smartphone photography for myself. I think that I can safely say that I have more than matched their skills in conventional photography, yet still have much more to learn. But that's another story.

I deliberately exposed for the sky and adjusted the luminance of the darker foreground, using Snapseed. This approach preserved the drama in the sky. Snapseed is a remarkably versatile, free of cost App. No wonder that it is so popular and highly recommended. More on this feature in a later posting. Plus more on the place of a smartphone camera with advancing years.
