My Way with the Ricoh GR iiix (2023)
20th November 2023 - 0 comments
The Ricoh GR iiix is my choice of replacement for the pioneering compact camera by Leica, the X1. That was the start of the Leica X-line which has long been discontinued. Unfortunately. Leica no longer makes compact cameras in the class of the Ricoh GR series.

My Way with the Leica Digilux 2 (2022)
06th November 2022 - 8 comments
Surprisingly, there are a few photographers who are discovering long-obsolete Leica Digilux 2 cameras. Questions occasionally arise on their suitability for modern digital photography, and how best to operate the camera. My notes went some way in meeting this demand; however, I felt a new article was justified. Hence, my latest offering in 'My Way' series.

My Favourite lens (2022)
25th August 2022 - 2 comments
‘My favourite lens’ is a recurring theme of discussions on photographic forums, certainly among active photographers. Sometimes they make for interesting reading, especially if the author has an unusual argument to advance. So I decided to give the subject a little thought and present my choice. There is no right or wrong answer and, over time, we are inclined to change our minds as we add new specimens to widen our capability. [October 2022 – Later I have added a new illustration showing the benefit of using a Leica tele-zoom, to capture an inaccessible group of rosy red apples, against the background of a blue sky]

The Future of the Leica CL in 2022
25th March 2022 - 8 comments
The Leica CL has been very well-received and is a widely used system. In normal times, we might have expected to see an upgraded version by now. But Leica remains silent. In this article, I ponder on what possibilities lie ahead, and prepare for the worst-case scenario.

Stepping Back in Time (2022)
01st February 2022 - 0 comments
Finding solace in quiet places is good for our health. Access to little-used public tracks is an important way to achieve this goal. Basic skills in reading maps of the area of interest, are all that is needed to discover historic rights of way, such as the one discussed in this article. All of this research came about as a result of simply revisiting old digital image files, largely forgotten.

Just grab a camera (2021)
22nd November 2021 - 2 comments
A splash of yellow, glimpsed through an upstairs window, caught my eye and aroused my curiosity. I grabbed an old Leica compact X1 camera, and went out to investigate. All too often, we spurn these golden moments. When possible, tarry for a moment and investigate.

My Way with the Leica X-Vario (2021)
01st October 2021 - 16 comments
The Leica X-Vario camera is a fine instrument, capable of yielding excellent photographic results. It was launched in June 2013. New entrants to Leica ownership, today, often consider this camera as a relatively low-cost entry purchase. By understanding its weaknesses and mastering its strengths, it is capable of giving highly satisfactory results. Good used specimens are hard to find and hold their value very well. This speaks to the enduring appeal of this sturdy, one-off model.

History Aiding Digital Photography (2021)
08th August 2021 - 4 comments
In a recent conversation I realized that some photographers were not aware of the existence or value of delving into history in digital processing. Knowledge of the History panel, in Adobe processing products (and probably alternative software), can help save potentially valuable pictures but, more likely, enable interesting alternative versions to be created. Read my new article on this fascinating subject here.

User Profiles - Are They Worthwhile? (2021)
18th July 2021 - 0 comments
A surprising number of my photographer friends, eschew the use of User (or Custom) Profiles. I suspect it is based on imagined complexity or, more likely, a preference to make operational changes manually, as needed. In this short article, I will try to persuade you to give them a trial. Once established, I am sure that you will be less prone to make mistakes when using your camera. Better still, you will still be able to make changes to your settings, manually!

My Way with the Leica CL (2021)
13th May 2021 - 19 comments
The Leica CL has proved to be a popular and effective heart of a compact camera system. At launch there were mixed reviews. However, Leica has upgraded its capabilities and handling in a quite remarkable way, silencing most critics. Expectations are high that a successor model may be launched, possibly this year. My article reviews some of its main features and lays out my way of working with the camera. Hopefully it will help new owners of the current CL master its operating modes to better effect.

Farewell Erwin Puts (7Dec1944 - 13Mar2021)
30th March 2021 - 0 comments
It was with great sadness that I learned of Erwin’s death earlier this month. He had reached 77 years and had been ill for some time.

Erwin was an honorary member of the Leica Fellowship and attended several meetings in the United Kingdom, which is where I met him and his lovely wife Els. He was a very modest man, quietly spoken, whose views and knowledge were eagerly sought and given.

Leica X1 suddenly had a serious fault (2020)
22nd September 2020 - 0 comments
In August 2020, my Leica X1 developed its first fault which rendered the camera unusable. I bought the camera new in 2010 and it has served me well for over ten years. It has never failed before. I have treated it with care and it lives, when not in use, in a padded case. However, most electronics equipment fails at some time during its active life. My Leica X1 decided that it could no longer focus the lens. Neither could it remember how to retract the lens when not needed. The full story is told here
