Representative older features
My published features span over forty years and cover a wide range of subjects. Some articles have been words only but the majority are illustrated with my own photographs.
Travel and photography have been recurring themes over the years although, numerically, craft features have predominated, particularly fine woodworking. I have profiled over 175 craft workers in wood, both male and female. In contrast, garden features have been a special source of joy because the owners and gardeners concerned have invariably been inspirational and friendly people. Subjects range from small town gardens to stately homes and the occasional celebrity.
The late Roald Dahl's garden was a highlight which was published in YOU magazine in the Mail on Sunday. Many of my horticulture pictures have been published worldwide through international agencies.
Although most of my work has been for the consumer press, I have a good track record of writing business features. Clients have included The Times (Small Business page), Rail Bulletin, Garden Centre Manager and Nurserymen & Garden Centres.
My Features Page will contain examples from a diverse range of my published work. Time permitting, the content will be refreshed.
I would be pleased to work with new editors and publishers. In particularly I am well-placed to cover subjects in the West Country and Wales but am also prepared to go further afield, budget permitting.
Examples of my work:
Tear sheet from YOU magazine:

Global recession has devastated many people's lives worldwide. Almost everyone has felt the impact of shop closures, home or job losses, lack of credit or other unsavory consequences. Photographic manufacturers have suffered and some new projects are on hold. Photographers have benefited from generous 'cash-back' offers, but secondhand values have slipped. In the UK a falling £pound has made overseas travel more expensive thus causing a rethink of holiday arrangements.
My article 'Beating the Recession' was recently published in Pentax magazine and aimed to stimulate positive thoughts about photography to offset the gloom.

My last craft workshop feature appears in the November 2008 issue of Good Woodworking magazine. It profiles one of the UK's top woodturners - Dave Roberts of Trowbridge Wiltshire. This four-page spread is shown in two pictures.

This was my last feature published in the final issue of FPME in 2008 before its demise. The article was written to give freelancers encouragement and some ideas on how to cope with editorial rejection by quoting from a real-life example. Rejected at the last minute by a new owner of a minor publication, this feature was given a new slant and accepted by YOU magazine, a leading Sunday colour supplement. Furthermore it led to further commissions.
The November 2008 issue of the BFP Newsletter contains my latest feature to help freelance photographers. Entitled "A DAM good aid to freelancing" it highlights the importance to photographers of understanding and applying Digital Asset Management - or DAM - practices to their digital workflow. The feature included three of my pictures to illustrate points made in the text. Facsimile prints of the article follow:

The following feature of mine appeared in the summer issue of Pentax User magazine published by The Magezine Publishing Co.
